Egypt makes stark choice for president

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptians voted on Saturday in the first free presidential election in their history to make what many find an unpalatable choice between a military man who served deposed autocrat Hosni Mubarak and an Islamist who says he is running for God.

Reeling from a court order two days ago to dissolve a new parliament dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, many question whether generals who pushed aside fellow officer Mubarak last year to appease the pro-democracy protests of the Arab Spring will honor a vow to relinquish power by July 1 to whoever wins.

"Both are useless but we must choose one of them unfortunately," said Hassan el-Shafie, 33, in Mansoura, north of Cairo, exasperated like many who picked centrists in last month's first round and now face a choice between two extremes.

With neither a parliament nor a new constitution in place to define the president's powers, the outcome from Saturday and Sunday's run-off will still leave 82 million Egyptians, foreign investors and allies in the United States and Europe unsure about what kind of state the most populous Arab nation will be.

Both contenders may herald further turbulence. An Islamist president will face a mistrustful army, while a victory by a Mubarak-era general will rile the revolutionaries on the street.

There are no reliable opinion polls for guidance, but former air force commander Ahmed Shafik, 70, Mubarak's prime minister in the last days of his rule, surged from outsider status and into the run-off. He has kept up the momentum by playing on fears about rule by an Islamist and the chaos that might bring.

His rival, the Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsy, paints himself as the last revolutionary in the race. He can be sure of solid support from the group's network of disciplined supporters built up over decades. But he has struggled to broaden his appeal.

A result may emerge within hours of polls closing on Sunday. Turnout in the first round last month was only 46 percent. An election official said Saturday's voting had been steady.

For the urban youth who drove the anti-Mubarak revolt, the decision is agonizing, so much so that some of the 50 million voters will spurn both, despite the blood spilt on the streets to end a 30-year rule marked by rigged and meaningless ballots.

Among those staying away was the sister of Khaled Said, a young activist whose death in police custody in 2010 became a cause c?l?bre which helped ignite the popular uprising: "I am boycotting this sham election," Zahra Said told Reuters.

"What guarantees does Shafik offer that he will not jail or torture youths? During his premiership many youths died and he did nothing," she said in her home city of Alexandria.

"Morsy is no good because he has manipulated the revolution, at times backing the youth and at other times abandoning them."

Yet, whoever wins, the army retains the upper hand. A Shafik presidency means a man steeped in military tradition will be back in charge, just like every president since the end of the monarchy in 1953. If Morsy wins, soldiers can still influence how much authority he has in the yet-to-be-written constitution.

MOOD CHANGE

Many fear the Brotherhood will not accept a defeat quietly and a Shafik win could touch off new unrest on the streets, forcing the army to take sides to impose order and further unsettle a heavyweight state at the heart of a troubled region.

It is a dramatic mood change from the euphoria when Mubarak fell on February 11, 2011. Many are now exhausted and frustrated after a messy and often violent interim period in which the generals have promised to set Egypt on a democratic path.

"If we elect Shafik, I think we can say the Egyptian revolution is over," said Ali Mahmoud Ibrahim, 44, heading to the polls in Cairo. "I will give Morsy a chance to make Egypt a good, Islamic state and to implement Islamic sharia law."

Yet, Shafik has gained traction among those who see him having the army's backing to restore order and revive an economy teetering on the brink of crisis with its foreign reserves drained sharply after tourists and investors packed up.

"He has exactly what we need in a leader. A strong military man to have a strong grip on the state and bring back security," said Hamdy Saif, 22, a student in Cairo's Nasser City district.

There are signs of exasperation with the Brotherhood's push for power after a revolt driven initially by the secular, urban middle class. The Brotherhood secured the biggest bloc in parliament after running for more seats than it said it would. It then reneged on its pledge not to run for president.

The court ruling to dissolve parliament reverses its gains, though that move has helped the group win some sympathizers.

"I was going to vote for Shafik but after parliament was dissolved, I changed my mind and will vote Morsy. There is no more fear of the Islamists dominating everything," said Ahmed Attiya, 35, an IT technician in Cairo's Zamalek district.

Critics denounced the court's parliament ruling as a "soft coup" and compared it to the start of Algeria's civil war, when the army cancelled an election won by Islamists 20 years ago.

But the Brotherhood renounced violence as a means to achieve political change in Egypt decades ago and an Islamist uprising in the 1990s was crushed by Mubarak and the same security forces which have survived last year's revolt intact.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces of about 20 generals is led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who was Mubarak's defense minister for two decades. The army controls businesses ranging from real estate to consumer goods factories.

Tantawi sent a letter to parliament ordering it to disperse and barring members from returning to the building, an official in the speaker's office said. The Brotherhood said the council wanted to "take all powers, despite the will of the people".

'DANGEROUS DAYS'

Hardline Islamist violence this month in Tunis, where the first Arab Spring uprising inspired Egyptians, has hardened fears of political Islam, notably among tourism workers, secular activists, women and Christians, who are a tenth of Egyptians.

"With Shafik I know what policy he is going to pursue but Morsy is enigmatic and shadowy like their underground group," said Walid Farouk, a 42-year-old cook, referring to the Brotherhood which was banned for decades under Mubarak.

But some threaten action after a Shafik victory that would disappoint many who massed on Cairo's Tahrir Square last year.

"If Shafik wins, I will be the first one to gather the people and go to Tahrir Square," said Sherif Abdel Aziz, 25, in Fayoum, a city south of Cairo.

The Brotherhood has warned of "dangerous days" and said a Shafik win could wipe out the gains of the revolt. It listed poll violations, including conscripts voting although they are barred. Election officials said any such violators were stopped.

Reflecting its suspicions, one Brotherhood official said many of the group's supporters would vote on Sunday to avoid any tampering with ballot boxes overnight.

International monitors gave guarded approval of the first round vote last month and Egyptian groups listed a range of mostly only minor violations on Saturday, apparently from both sides. In one curio, Egyptian officials reported seizing pens that use ink which disappears within hours. They gave no detail.

Both candidates have sought the centre ground, promising to rule in the spirit of the revolution: "It is not correct that the military council wants to rule through me," said Shafik, seen as a potential successor even in Mubarak's time although he and other contenders were overshadowed by the president's son.

Protesters chanted slogans for and against Shafik as he voted in Cairo. But he did not face a hail of shoes or the kind of abuse he received when he voted in the first round.

Morsy has played down talk of a crackdown on beachwear and alcohol that would hurt tourism and steered away from confrontation with Israel after three decades of cool peace maintained during Mubarak's military-backed rule.

Mobbed by backers after voting in Zagazig in the Nile Delta, Morsy said: "There is absolutely no room for Mubarak's aides."

But both candidates are defined by those who promoted them. Morsy says he is running because God expects him to offer his sacrifice for the nation. Shafik's air force career shadowed that of Mubarak, his elder by 13 years.

Webb Simpson stays focused, claims U.S. Open

Webb Simpson, U.S. Open champion. (Getty Images)

A good rule for the U.S. Open: Keep your head while those around you are losing theirs. A better rule: Shoot low while others are shooting themselves in the foot.

Webb Simpson did both, erasing a couple early mistakes ? and a four-shot deficit ? to win what turned out to be a nail-biter of a U.S. Open.

Simpson bogeyed two of his first five holes and stood at +5, his hopes apparently vaporized. But then came three straight birdies, and four in five holes, and presto, he was right back in the mix. A fortunate par save on 18, from the exact same spot that Tiger Woods chunked a shot on Saturday, and Simpson found himself in the lead by a stroke and waiting for Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell to finish their final holes.

[Also: Tiger Woods has devoted, if disappointed, fans]

Both men made it interesting; McDowell birdied 17 and missed a 24-foot putt on 18. Furyk, who had held the lead since Friday afternoon, gave up a costly bogey on 16 and put his approach on 18 into the sand. But in the end, both men missed their opportunity, and Webb Simpson had the U.S. Open trophy drop into his hands.

There's always irony in golf, and Simpson embodies one such story: He was an Arnold Palmer scholar at Wake Forest, and one of Palmer's most famous defeats came right at Olympic in 1966. He stepped to the tenth tee leading by seven shots, yet fell apart and would lose to Billy Casper in a playoff.

There would be no such playoff for Simpson, who watched calmly in the clubhouse as the two U.S. Open champions tried to match him but fell short. And at just 26 years old, Simpson has many more opportunities to capitalize on his newfound success.

A team used electroshocking devices to temporarily stun the Gila trout so they could quickly be scooped into a net. From there, the fish were being put into a tank to be ferried out of the wilderness via helicopter to a special truck that was waiting to drive them to a hatchery in northern New Mexico for safe keeping.

The first load of trout was brought out Friday and the work would continue into Saturday, said Art Telles, a biologist and staff resource officer with the Gila National Forest.

The fish are imperiled by the wildfire aftermath ? choking floods of ash, soil and charred debris that are expected to come with summer rains.

"When we have hot fire in some of these drainages, that can move ash and sediment after the rains start and that is pretty deadly to trout," he said.

The fish wranglers are focusing on small creeks deep within the perimeter of the Whitewater-Baldy fire, a blaze that has charred more than 453 square miles of the forest and its famed Gila Wilderness. The fire, the largest in the state's history and the biggest currently burning in the United States, is 63 percent contained.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is planning a two-day trip to Colorado and New Mexico as the fires continue to force evacuations, threaten buildings and scorch large swaths of land in both states.

Vilsack will meet with fire managers in Fort Collins on Saturday and will be with U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell in Albuquerque on Sunday.

Crews in south-central New Mexico continued to build lines around a second blaze that destroyed 224 homes while racing through 59 square miles outside the mountain resort town of Ruidoso. That blaze was 51 percent contained.

Authorities were allowing more residents back into their homes Friday. They said most communities could re-open by the start of the weekend.

In Colorado, more than 1,500 firefighters were trying to slow down the High Park Fire, which had consumed more than 84 square miles by Friday night.

Thunderstorms and windy conditions were threatening to develop as aircraft and ground crews tried to snuff out a 200-acre spot fire that erupted north of the blaze. Authorities sent evacuation notices to about 300 phone lines in the area and told other people to be prepared to leave.

At least 112 homes have been damaged or destroyed, authorities confirmed Friday. They said that the number will go up as crews can reach areas to make assessments.

Federal land managers and scientists have said repeatedly in recent weeks that the frequency and size of wildfires are expected to continue to intensify due to a combination of factors, including decades of fire suppression and persistent drought.

The aftermath of these massive fires is also a growing concern, as denuded mountainsides threaten to send soil and blackened debris into watersheds and communities.

Teams of recovery specialists have been surveying the damage of New Mexico's largest blaze in the Gila forest and are plotting out ways to deal with flooding and reseeding. Part of the preparation includes moving the Gila trout.

The trout was one of the original species listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1973. At that time, its range had been reduced to only four streams within the Gila forest. Through recovery efforts, federal officials decided in 2006 to change the trout's status to threatened.

"The burning of some of these drainages here definitely is a concern because they're some of the streams we had worked on to help with recovery," Telles said.

The immediate focus includes trout in Whiskey and Langstroth creeks, which make up one of four genetically distinct lineages of the fish. Forest and wildlife officials are also evaluating whether to remove Gila trout from Spruce Creek as well as federally protected Gila chub from Turkey Creek.

The evacuated fish could end up staying at the Mora hatchery in northern New Mexico for some time, forest officials said. After the fire, biologists will monitor the area to see how much ash and sediment will be washed into the creeks by summer monsoons.

Telles said it's too early to say whether the fire and the aftermath will have any effect on the trout's status.

The decades-long effort to help the trout recover has included the removal of nonnative fish from a handful of streams in the wilderness. Restocking in some streams started two years ago.

"The Gila trout is an intrinsic value to our wilderness. It's part of what people seek when they come here," Telles said. "You have trout fishermen from all over the country who want to come and fish for Gila trout."

School programs lead fight against childhood obesity | Healthy Diet ...

Inside E.A. Jones Elementary School, the battle against childhood obesity is being fought with fresh ingredients.

Bulletin boards tout the merits of home gardens and expose the tongue-twisting preservatives in junk food. Students take a ?food adventurer? pledge, promising to sample new recipes and never to utter the words ?yuck? or ?gross.? Stainless steel bowls burst with a bounty of greens, vegetables and herbs freshly harvested from the school garden.

And fifth-grade chefs sport aprons and spout exuberant reviews of their seed-to-plate cooking class.

?I love it!? said Andy Jaime, 11, his eyes lighting up behind his glasses. ?We learn about different types of food and how to eat healthy.?

It?s a typical day in the Fort Bend ISD school?s culinary classroom, where professional chefs from Recipe for Success guide students through healthy cooking lessons, organic gardening and nutrition education.

The classes are one component of Activate for Kids, a health and fitness pilot program developed by UnitedHealthcare and the United Health Foundation. The program, which kicked off this year in six school districts in Texas, Florida and Georgia, is among a growing number using a more holistic approach to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic.

In addition to the cooking classes, Activate for Kids runs early morning Zumba aerobics classes for elementary students, an obesity intervention program for kids and their parents, and health and fitness fairs in the Fort Bend and Klein school districts.

In Sharpstown High School, one of 53 schools across the country participating in the HealthCorps program started by Dr. Mehmet Oz, students can take before-school meditation classes or participate in an after-school fitness club.

Recipe for Success, a Houston-based nonprofit that offers cooking, gardening and nutrition education classes in 13 Houston-area schools, is expanding its curriculum nationwide by offering online training and certification.

?More and more schools are realizing that this is something they need to do,? said Gracie Cavnar, the founder of Recipe for Success. ?All the data says weight patterns and food attitudes are set for life by age 11. Early intervention is mandatory.?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese, and childhood obesity rates have more than tripled over the last 30 years. Those children are at greater risk of diabetes, hypertension and other illnesses, are more likely to drop out of school, and demonstrate shorter attention spans.

Many of the programs incorporate nutrition education, cooking classes, fitness lessons, goal-setting techniques and emotional wellness tips.

Performance Bike Logo

Patterned after the Peace Corps, Healthcorps recruits new college graduates for two-year stints as school coordinators. At Sharpstown High Scool, Jornae Nevels leads cooking classes, fitness sessions and meditation training.

?It?s about exposing them to something new,? said Nevels, who also educates students about better food choices.

Activate for Kids offers anti-obesity training for school nurses and serves as a conduit between schools and community resources, said Stephanie Kellam, the wellness coordinator assigned to Fort Bend ISD. For example, the Recipe for Success classes at Jones Elementary are funded by a United Health Foundation grant.

If a recent fifth-grade cooking class is any indication, the program is already having an impact on the students.

That day, Recipe for Success chef Rakhi Desai ? Miss Rakhi to the kids ? led the class through the steps for making healthful pizza. The students chopped up fragrant bunches of oregano and parsley, rolled out whole-wheat dough and sprinkled rainbow-hued veggie toppings across the rectangular canvas.

But the real test came after the veggie and pesto pizzas came out of the oven, and everyone got a taste and a chance to review their creation.

?It?s delicious!? declared Andy. ?I would keep it exactly the way it is.?
