Let's begin with safety tips, the obvious ones first. After dark avoid ocean swimming; in fact don't set foot in the water after six in the evening. All the beaches have lifeguards working from nine the morning until six in the evening. You can identify them by their white shirts (with a red cross on the back) and their red shorts make them easy to spot.
The waters of Mexico may seem calm and lovely most of the time, but that vision of peacefulness is deceiving. The Yucatan Peninsula juts out between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, resulting in converging ocean waters and an incredibly strong undertow. That undertow has claimed innumerable lives over the years, be safe and stay out of the water after dark.
If you have been drinking alcohol at the beach in Cancun, avoid swimming. Just as alcohol alters your judgement and depth perception when driving, it also impedes valuable coordination and stamina needed to tread water, avoid undertow or swim away from danger. Take good advice and use your smarts, honesty and good sense: don't drink and swim.
Here is a little piece of information most people are not aware of: the beaches of Mexico are entirely federally owned. The hotels and resorts would love to have everyone think they own the sand and surf in front of their facility and restrict its use to their own guests or 'make' you buy a beverage before using the beach. That is simply untrue. The beaches are for everyone's use, no matter where you are staying. Don't let any staff push or bully you into purchasing food and drinks for your spot in the sand.
This is just the beginning; we have more hidden tips for enjoying the beaches of Cancun coming up in our next instalment. Believe it or not, there are secrets to Cancun not yet exposed!
