Letting Go and Writer's Block ? Amy Beth O'Brien - Star In Your Own ...

A man recently asked me if I ever experience writer?s block, and if so, how I handle it.? It?s a common question to ask a writer.? I remember asking a writer-friend the same thing a long time ago when I was just starting out.

Here?s my take on it.

I don?t think writer?s block is any different than any other form of block we feel when we are trying to force something that isn?t ready to be born.? Readiness is key.

It would be a bit like planting a tomato seed and then standing over the soil waiting for it to sprout, grow, flower, and produce fruit.? You wouldn?t do that.? In nature, creation doesn?t happen instantaneously.? There?s a process involved.?

You may have an idea for a new business and feel frustrated because you can?t figure out a way to leave your full-time job now to go start it.? A knitter may see the design of a gorgeous sweater begin to form in her mind, but it requires getting it down on paper, a pattern, and the daily task of going one stitch at a time.? An athlete may want to run the Boston Marathon, but going the distance takes practice and a twenty-six mile run.

I believe that blocks form when we want to cross the finish line now.? We want the tomato, the business, the sweater, the performance, and the book today.

A block is nature?s way of saying something needs to happen first.? You need to go for a walk, meditate, go see a friend, play the piano, clean your house, cook, call someone, see a show, read a book, or just be.? It is telling you to stop and listen.? The true block is impatience and the fact that you?re not tuning in to your intuitive, wise inner director for guidance.?

Letting go allows readiness to happen.?

Let go.
